SAPEA

YASAS became an official member during the SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) project in 2022, and continues to be inolved in this third funding cycle.

SAPEA is part of the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM), which provides independent scientific evidence and policy recommendations to the College of European Commissioners on any subject, including on policy issues that the European Parliament and the Council consider to be of major importance.

SAPEA is a consortium of six academy networks - Academia Europaea, ALLEA, EASAC, Euro-CASE, FEAM and YASAS - representing around 120 academies across more than 40 European countries and encompassing expertise across the natural sciences, engineering, medicine, social sciences and humanities. Within the SAM, SAPEA’s role is to convene interdisciplinary working groups to produce evidence review reports that inform the policy recommendations of the Chief Scientific Advisors.

YASAS role within SAPEA

YASAS facilitates the participation of Young Academies and early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) in SAPEA activities aimed at delivering science advice to the European Commission. In this role, YASAS shares calls for nominations with its membership to promote the inclusion of EMCRs in SAPEA Working Groups and workshops, amongst others.

Additionally, in the previous SAPEA cycle, YASAS had the task to develop, monitor, and support the implementation of a strategy to improve the involvement of EMCRs in SAPEA science-for- policy activities.

In this third SAPEA cycle, YASAS will participate in and take the lead on the delivery of SAPEA Evidence Review Reports in response to requests from the European Commission. Furthermore, YASAS is leading on a SAPEA Work Package focused on developing a comprehensive, forward-looking Stratedy on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for SAPEA.
